Self Help Africa Education Visit

The King’s Hospital School recently hosted an inspiring day of international learning, leadership, and scientific achievement, welcoming distinguished guests from Self Help Africa as part of a special educational visit.

The event celebrated the success of students Matthew Johnson and Enoch Tsang, who recently won recognition at the Young Scientist showcase held in Iveagh House. As part of the visit, they presented their project to visiting Country Directors, sharing their scientific thinking and exploring real-world applications of their research.

The school was honoured to welcome three international development leaders:

  • Elia Manda (Zambian CD)
  • Joy Aderle (Nigeria CD)
  • Paul Andre Traore (Burkina Faso CD)

The visitors joined morning Chapel, where they briefly addressed students, offering insight into their work in international development and the importance of global cooperation in addressing inequality.

Throughout the day, the guests engaged with students across multiple year groups. Form 2 and Form 3 Geography classes took part in discussions exploring inequality, comparing life experiences between Ireland and countries such as Nigeria, and examining themes including economic disparity, access to healthcare and education, gender equality, and life chances in developed and developing contexts.

Later sessions continued with Form 6 Religion classes, where students explored issues including food poverty in Zambia, as well as the distinction between relative and absolute poverty, linking directly to curriculum themes on social justice and development.

A highlight of the visit was the presentation by Matthew Johnson and Enoch Tsang to the visiting Country Directors, with Form 1 Science students also in attendance. This session encouraged discussion on scientific solutions developed by students and how innovation can contribute to addressing global challenges.

In addition to academic engagement, the visitors were given a tour of the school by student prefects and enjoyed lunch with the Headmaster, further strengthening the connection between the school community and international partners.

The day reflected the school’s commitment to global citizenship, academic excellence, and meaningful engagement with real-world issues, while celebrating outstanding student achievement on an international stage.
