King’s Hospital senior boys rugby team produced a dramatic finish to edge past The High School 24–17 in the first round of the Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Cup at Energia Park, with full-back Lewis Keary emerging as the late hero.
The High School burst out of the blocks, racing into an early lead with two tries. King’s Hospital responded with real intent, sparked by Adam Abkary’s powerful carry and finished brilliantly by Freddy Rust, who added the conversion. Rust was again instrumental soon after, sending William Nuzum through for a try that gave King’s Hospital a narrow halftime advantage.
The second half was fiercely contested, with The High School applying sustained pressure and eventually reclaiming the lead, but King’s Hospital showed resilience and composure, regaining momentum with a well-executed try from substitute David Coakley.
With the game in the balance and time running out, King’s Hospital kept possession and carried with purpose. Their patience paid off in the dying moments as Lewis Keary crossed in the corner to secure a memorable victory and cap a thrilling cup encounter.
As a school, we are immensely proud of this performance and look forward to the next challenge in the Vinnie Murray Senior Cup.
