A Special Caleb Powell Rugby Festival

Last Sunday, our school grounds were buzzing with excitement, sunshine and the sound of rugby as we proudly hosted the Caleb Powell Mini Rugby Festival.

Teams from Athy, Virginia, Mulingar, Navan, Birr, North Kildare, Westmanstown, Creggs and Barnhall joined us for a fantastic day filled with energy, teamwork and true rugby spirit. From the first whistle to the final try, the atmosphere was electric, with a wonderful sense of community evident both on and off the pitch.

The festival also provided a special opportunity to honour Caleb Powell, a former pupil, teacher and vice-principal who made an extraordinary contribution to rugby and school life over many decades. A commemorative bench dedicated to Caleb, located by the rugby pitches, serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy. We were especially honoured to welcome his wife Gillian and family, who joined us for the occasion.

Caleb’s impact on the school remains deeply valued. A distinguished sportsman in his school days, he captained the senior rugby team and later went on to coach and inspire generations of players. His dedication to the school community spanned 40 years of teaching, including two decades as vice-principal.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to all the players, coaches, parents and volunteers who made the day such a memorable success. It was a fitting celebration of rugby, community and legacy — and we look forward to many more festivals in the years to come.
