THE SPORTS ROUND-UP

Hockey

Our Senior A Girls qualified for the semi-final of the Regional Cup but unfortunately lost to

St Andrew’s.  They also qualified for the final of the Claudia Tierney Cup where, regrettably, they lost on sudden death shuttles to Rathdown School. Congratulations to all involved in such a successful season. We wish Head Coach and former Head of Hockey, Mick McKinnon, the very best in his new role with Irish Hockey.

Our Senior A Boys won the Leinster Schools Cup for the first time in 29 years, beating Wesley College. This is a hugely significant result and the boys and they coaches must be commended for their performances throughout the season which culminated in this success.

We are finally able to use the resurfaced Gibson Astro pitch and although there are some minor snags to be completed, we are absolutely delighted with the quality of the surface.

Congratulations to Alex Derrien who was selected for the Irish U18 Boys squad and to Scott Kenny and Caleb Xantho who have been selected for the Irish U16 squad.

Rugby

Our Junior Boys team lost their rescheduled 1B league final vs St Pat’s, Navan but they have another chance at silverware when they play Templeogue College in the Junior Plate final on April 19th.

As part of the early preparations for next season a team of current TY and Form 5 students travelled to Birkenhead where they were eventually beaten in the semi-final of the prestigious North of England Schools 7s Tournament.

Coaches Joe Walsh and Dan van Zyl have stepped down from their coaching roles with the SCT and we wish to thank them for their commitment and wish them well.

The coaching team for next season has been appointed and will consist of past student Keith Sothern (Head Coach), Darragh Bellanova (Set-piece and contact skills coach), David Hare (performance coach), Simone Ragusi (Skills and Development Coach), along with Head of Rugby Ian Dumbleton (Defence coach).

Basketball

Our U16 Girls won the Dublin Regional league to cap a remarkable season.  They were very unfortunate in having to then play their All-Ireland round of 16 match without some of their international boarders who were not back from Christmas holidays as the game was fixed for the first Saturday in January.

Our U16 and U19 boys both won silver in their Area Plate finals.

Our u13 Pink team won the East Region Cup and, as we go to print, both our U13 Pink team and our U14 Pink team have qualified for the All-Irelands quarterfinal stages which will be played after Easter.

Athletics

Congratulations to David Coakley and Emily O’Brien who qualified for the Leinster Cross Country event.  David subsequently missed out on the All-Ireland Inter event by a single place.  David will run at Inter level again for the next two years, so we are confident of future success.

Congratulations to our Girls’ Medley Relay team of Ashley Meagher, Saesha Hughes, Isabella Bradvica, and Alanna Stewart who won bronze at the West Leinster Schools event on 29th March.

Congratulations too, to Abigail Farrell who placed 5th overall in the National Indoor Athletics u17 60m Hurdles.

Swimming

Congratulations to the six members of our swimming team who competed in the Leinster Schools Swim Championships for the first time!

A special word of congratulations to our U14 Boys medley relay team who won gold – Ethan O’Sullivan, Henry Michael, Sean Maguire, and Callum Swindell-Nolan (all Form 1). The boys’ then went on to win bronze (freestyle) and silver (IM) at the National Schools Championships.

Rowing

We completed our annual capsize training session with Neptune in our swimming pool last month and our junior rowers won gold (J15 double), and silver (J16 double and J16 single) at the Commercial Regatta last weekend.

Head Coach, Will Yeomans has arranged for our Junior Boys to take part in the renowned Ghent International Regatta in early May.

Our Summer sports programme began from Monday, 20th March when, while continuing to provide coaching in Hockey, Rugby, Basketball, Rowing, Yoga, and Swimming, we are also providing a comprehensive practice and games programmes in Athletics, Cricket, Tennis, and Football.

Our annual sports awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 25th from 7pm
