Literacy in the Digital Era

The King’s Hospital School was buzzing with energy and creativity as we celebrated Literacy Week 2025, centred around the theme “Literacy in the Digital Era.” The week was packed with activities, challenges and guest events that encouraged students to think about how reading, writing and communication continue to evolve in a fast-changing digital world.

Throughout the week, students enjoyed a wide variety of in-class activities and competitions designed to spark curiosity and engagement. One of the highlights was the ever-popular Guess the Books in the Christmas Tree challenge, which had students and staff puzzling over titles cleverly hidden within a festive display.

Our digital focus took on a global element as E-Twinning connected Form 5 students with Maggie’s former school in the United States, allowing them to exchange ideas and experiences across continents. Students also had the opportunity to meet the Book Doctor, who offered personalised reading prescriptions to inspire new literary journeys.

We were delighted to welcome Maeve Collins, who led an engaging session with Form 2 and met with our Book Club, sparking lively discussions and encouraging deeper reading habits. Adding to the excitement, teachers Mr Molloy and Mr Shaw went head-to-head in a much-anticipated debate, showcasing strong arguments and plenty of humour.

A special highlight of the week was a visit from past pupil and author Randall Plunkett, who spoke to Form 4 students about his writing career, creativity and the importance of storytelling in both traditional and digital formats. His insights offered students a unique look into the world of modern authorship.

Literacy Week 2025 was a vibrant celebration of reading, creativity and connection—reminding us all of the power of stories, both on the page and online.
