Maura Wins RSA Safety Award

We are incredibly proud to announce that Maura Moore-McCune, form 6 at The King’s Hospital School, has been awarded the Gertie Shields Supreme Award at the 2025 Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards. This prestigious accolade recognises exceptional leadership and commitment to road safety, honouring the legacy of Gertie Shields, who dedicated her life to campaigning for stronger road safety laws.

Maura was recognised for her pioneering work on VIPMOD (Vision Impaired Person’s Moving Object Detector), a groundbreaking device that uses smart glasses and mobile technology to detect fast-moving vehicles. VIPMOD is designed to improve the safety and independence of vision-impaired pedestrians, addressing the heightened collision risks they face on our roads.

Her remarkable achievements don’t stop there. Maura also represented Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2025 in Columbus, Ohio, where she won fourth place in Biomedical Engineering for her VIPMOD project. She is also a recipient of the Mawhiba Universal Enrichment Program Award, recognising her innovation and contribution to global scientific research.

The award was presented on Wednesday morning at Croke Park during the Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards. Maura’s work has already made a significant impact, highlighting the power of innovation, dedication and leadership to make our roads safer for everyone.
