Walking Together at Dawn: A Student’s Experience at Darkness Into Light 2025

In the early hours of Saturday, May 10, 2025, I joined thousands of people across Ireland and the world for Darkness Into Light, Pieta’s annual sunrise walk aimed at raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention and mental health support. The event began at 4:15 a.m., symbolizing the journey from darkness into light, a powerful metaphor for hope and healing.

This year’s event was supported by Electric Ireland and featured over 200 official walks globally. Participants gathered in various locations, including GAA clubs, churches, and schools, to walk 5 kilometers as dawn broke. The walk is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a communal act of solidarity for those affected by suicide and self-harm.

As a student, participating in Darkness Into Light was both humbling and inspiring. The sense of community was palpable as we walked together, each step a testament to our collective commitment to mental health awareness. The event also serves as a vital fundraiser for Pieta, which relies on public donations for 85% of its funding. In 2024 alone, Pieta provided nearly 52,000 hours of therapy and answered 100,000 calls and texts to its crisis helpline.

Participating in Darkness Into Light allowed me to contribute to a cause that touches many lives. It was a reminder that, together, we can bring hope to those in their darkest moments.
