Exploring New Skills in Transition Year: From the Driver’s Seat to the Coffee Machine
Transition Year (TY) at The King’s Hospital School is all about discovering new skills, embracing unique opportunities, and gaining real-world experience. This week, our TY students are diving into exciting activities that highlight the diverse opportunities available in the program.
First Gear: A Student’s First Driving Lesson
For our student, this week marked a significant milestone – their first driving lesson! With the guidance of an experienced instructor, they learned the basics of road safety, maneuvering, and building confidence behind the wheel. While it was nerve-wracking at first, they quickly got the hang of things and left with a huge smile. Learning to drive is an important step towards independence, and Transition Year is the perfect time to get started.
Behind the Barista Counter
Traded textbooks for espresso shots as they began training as a barista. From mastering the art of steaming milk to perfecting latte art, they discovered the skills and creativity that go into making the perfect cup of coffee. Beyond the technical skills, the experience also taught them about teamwork, customer service, and the satisfaction of crafting something with care. Who knows? They might just be the next expert behind your local café counter!
Learning Beyond the Classroom
These experiences are just two examples of how our TY program encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and explore the practical skills that will benefit them in life. Whether it’s learning to navigate the roads or brewing the perfect cappuccino, TY gives students the freedom to grow, experiment, and discover new passions.
We’re so proud of our TY students and can’t wait to see where their newfound skills will take them next!
