Ross Murphy, who left in 2013, has been awarded the Nind Scholarship in recognition to how well he has responded to the challenges of academic life in Oxford. While in The King's Hospital, Ross came first in the country in the Spanish Leaving Certificate examination in 2013. This was a tremendous achievement, not just because Ross had beaten over 6000 other students to come first in Ireland, but because he was mostly self-taught, having taken up Spanish in Transition Year. I had been aware of Ross’s interest and ability in Spanish and encouraged him to consider it for the Leaving Certificate, so at the start of Sixth Year, I began giving him private classes. Ross is an incredibly gifted linguist, and he also captained the Spanish Debating Team that year. The classes, the debating and Ross’s determination and skill led him to this wonderful achievement.
