Spanish Debating has begun again. The team consists of David Kelly (Captain), Kate O'Malley, Tamara Kraus and Ben Buller with subsitutes David Shekleton and Emily Murphy. Their first and very topical motion was Independence for Catalonia, which the team supported. However, they lost to Blackrock College. Congratulations to Kate O'Malley who won Best Speaker on the night. The team will face Loreto Beaufort on November 8 opposing the motion that Homework should be Prohibited.
English Debating Updates Autumn 2017
This year we've got a new Concern Debating Team with Form 4 students including Richard Beattie, Jordan Thompson, Hassan Alekri and captain Tanesha Yimga. On Wednesday, 25th of October we attended a Concern Debating workshop in the Carmelite Community Centre in the city centre. The students enjoyed themselves immensely and picked up a lot of tips (photo attached). On Tuesday, 24th of October, we had our first home Concern debate against Holy Family Community School on the motion 'For women to access leadership positions, gender quotas must be implemented'. Unfortunatley, we lost. We are now preparing for our second Concern Debate against Colaiste Phadraig on the motion 'To end hunger, the world must embrace GMOs'.
This year, 5 students have progressed to Round 2 of the Leinster Schools Debating Competition. Robert Gibbons and Kemka Abuchi progressed as a team directly from Round 1 having opposed the motion 'This house believes the government should build social housing in wealthy areas'. Our two remaining teams competed in the Wildcard round and one team, Tanesha Yimga and Daniel Ohoka, and one individual, Hassan Alekri, went through to Round 2 having debated the motion 'This house would pay additional benefits to families on welfare according to their children's performance in school'. The students are eagerly anticipating Leinsters Round 2 which will take place on the 14th of November.
