KH ceremony at St Patrick's Cathedral
The King’s Hospital School has hosted the first in its series of 350th commemoration events with a Service of Celebration at St Patrick’s Cathedral - complete with archival display of the school’s long and storied history.
In a powerful ceremony laced with rich choral performances, school chaplain Canon Peter Campion opened the service welcoming “students and staff, past and present, our Governors, Board members, our parents and the King’s Hospital family joining us online now around the world”.
He welcomed the clergy and thanked Archbishop Michael Jackson and Bishop Pat Storey for their attendance.
The Revd Ruth Noble, from the class of 1986, read from the Old Testament, while Bishop Roy Warke, from the class of 1948, did a reading from the New Testament.
Former deputy headmaster Glascott Symes addressed the congregation of 1,000 guests on the history of the school – from its foundation to its survival and later to its blossoming, saying “no human institution can survive for 350 years without showing significant responsiveness and adaptability to change”.
Continuing the theme of change, newly appointed headmaster Mark Ronan, in his inaugural address, said: “Looking back crystallises what is most important to us moving forward, and is what I’d like to focus on today".
He spoke about technology as a driver for change and how “teaching practices, the courses we teach, and the facilities which enrich our students’ learning, will continue to evolve to ensure they leave KH equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of a changing world.
“That changing world will need people - with the dexterity and enthusiasm to adapt to change; who can think on their feet; engage and empathise with others; and treat all with respect regardless of difference.
“These same values are key for KH to become an even better school but remain true to its Foundation in 1669.”
The ceremony ended with a blessing from Archbishop of Dublin Michael Jackson.
