Irish is a core subject in the Junior Certificate, Transition Year and Leaving Certificate programmes in The King's Hospital.
The Junior Cert Irish syllabus is aimed at developing listening, speaking and writing skills and it is examined at higher, ordinary, and foundation level. There is no oral exam, but pupils will be tested (depending on level) on a combination of aural, written, and literature skills.
The Leaving Certificate has two papers, the first a language paper at both Higher and Ordinary Levels and the second testing the study of prose passages at both levels.
The study of Irish is promoted in The King's Hospital through class excursions, including supervised visits to the Gaeltacht, theatre trips, and annual events such as Seachtain na Gaeilge.
